Interlaken
Welcome to the adventure capital of Europe. Nestled at the foot of the Oberland and Swiss Alps, Interlaken was once a transitory rest stop but today has become a resort destination for those looking to enjoy picturesque scenery, Swiss culture, and a relaxed atmosphere. All draws are secondary to its true beauty, a natural playground of entertainment in the mountains, cliffs, waterfalls, rapids, and lakes that satisfies even the most dependent of adrenaline junkies. Those in search of a thrill migrate from around the globe to this mecca of the insane to test the limits of gravity like Newton and product warranties like Evil Knievel.
Sign that release form and pick your sport… like the sensation of a free fall? You can skydive out of a helicopter through the Alps at over 10,000 feet, Bungee jump (the 2nd tallest in the world) over the city’s namesake lake; Para and Hang glide; or Canyon Swing between two cliffs just barely missing the rapids 500ft below (one of very few places in the world to experience what many say is the best thing to do in Interlaken). More of a water guy? Test your whitewater rafting skills in rapids consistently fed by the runoff from the glaciers above. If that’s too easy then lose the raft and go Canyoning, a top to bottom excursion through nature made waterslides, off of 30 ft waterfalls, and down pumping rapids with just a helmet, lifejacket, and some zip line.
Nurse those fresh injuries and tell the war story over a spiked hot chocolate at any one of the fine food & dining establishments in town with enough variety to please any mood. While you’re at it, feed that down trodden body of yours with a taste of Swiss cuisine or other worldly fare, one of the most popular among the younger crowd being Hooters. Nightlife is a mix of all-in-one hotels (think ski lodge-esque accommodations offering extreme sports by day and wild parties by night) and European pubs big on fireside cocktails. The best part of all… adrenaline is the perfect hangover cure, or so the locals claim.
